Tranilast

Tranilast is a custom pharmacy drug classified in the family of drugs known as antiallergics. Tranilast is used to treat a wide variety of conditions such as bronchial asthma, atypical dermatitis, allergic conjunctivitis, as well as keloids and hypertrophic scars. Some studies have indicated that tranilast usage may also be beneficial to conditions such as fibrosis, cancer, cardiovascular problems, proliferative disorders, autoimmune disorders, renal diseases, ocular diseases, and diabetes.

HOW TO USE:

Tranilast may be compounded into different forms for delivery. Talk to your doctor and consult with your compounding pharmacist. Only your doctor should decide which, if any, form is appropriate and safe for your use. Tranilast is sometimes given as a capsule. Capsules of 100mg active ingredient are generally taken 3 times per day or as directed by your doctor. Always follow your doctor's precise directions for usage and dosage.

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS:

Modern medications can sometimes offer wonderful benefits to some patients, but side effects may be a possible outcome as well with the introduction of any drug into the body. Be sure to see your doctor right away if you experience any side effects that are lingering, or getting worse or more intense. Common side effects seen with tranilast are provided below.

  • Nettle Rash
  • Itching
  • Contact Dermatitis
  • Eczema
  • Anorexia
  • Nausea and/or Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Gastric Distress
  • Abdominal Pain
  • Erythematous Macule

Severe Side Effects Overview:

While taking tranilast you may experience severe side effects. Before beginning use of this drug you should consult with your doctor and have him or her list, and review in detail, all the possible severe side effects that could be encountered while using tranilast. If you experience anything that feels severe, see your doctor right away, or get medical attention immediately.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you experience a side effect and are unsure whether it warrants immediate medical treatment or not, always err on the side of caution and seek medical assistance.

CONTRAINDICATIONS:

All patients considering the possible use of tranilast should undergo a complete physical and have a comprehensive consultation with their doctor before beginning use. Never use any drug, supplement, herbal, or other without the prior approval of your doctor.

Tranilast is contraindicated for the following:

  • Pregnancy
  • Premature Placental Abruption
  • Bleeding or Toxemia in Third Trimester of Pregnancy
  • Patients Less Than 2 Years Old
  • Hypersensitivity to Tranilast
