Debate about Vitamin B and Memory Loss Finally Put to Rest

Published on November 14th, 2014

There has been a lot of talk at our compounding pharmacy recently about the apparent cause of memory loss upon taking vitamin B and folic acid supplements. There have also been discussions about taking vitamin B12 and folic acid to reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and memory loss, since homocysteine levels can be reduced upon taking these. What should we believe is true? Previous studies found mixed results, but a new comprehensive study may finally put an end to the debate once and for all.

The latest study, published in the Neurology journal, shows that over a two-year period people who had taken B vitamins had decreased levels of homocysteine, while a second group who took a placebo supplement showed no improvement. However, those in the placebo group and the vitamin B group did not show any significant improvement on thinking and memory tests. In addition, vitamin levels could be connected to changes in the brain that are not visible to psychological tests, but they can be seen on brain scans, the study said.

Are there People with a Vitamin Deficiency?

A great majority of people are able to get B12 vitamins they need through a basic diet. Meat, fish, eggs and dairy products are all rich in this vitamin. However, there are patients who struggle from vitamin deficiencies. Without some of the supplements that we obtain from vitamin B, our bodies would not be able to convert carbohydrates into energy, promote metabolic reactions for growth, or provide assistance in development of red blood cells. Vitamin B deficiency occurs for a number of different reasons, some of which are unknown but others present themselves as the following:

  • Pernicious anemia
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Weight loss
  • Stomach issues
  • Memory loss
  • Shortness of breath
  • Tingling of hands and feet
