Improve your Hugs with Oxytocin
Have you ever wondered where the warm and fuzzy feeling comes from when cuddling, or why sometimes you just need a hug? That’s where oxytocin comes in. Aptly referred to as “the cuddle hormone,” this multifaceted hormone has been used to help mothers bond with their newborns and even stimulate brain activity in children and teenagers with autism . At Fusion Rx compounding pharmacy, oxytocin is just one of the many hormone treatments we have available, and we take pride in customizing each unique treatment plan according to each and every patient’s needs.
What is this Miracle Hormone and What does it do?
This multi-purposed hormone is produced in the hypothalamus (that all-important part of the brain that tells you if you’re hungry or full, hot or cold, amongst many, many other things), oxytocin is released throughout the day from actions like a long hug, intercourse or even watching an emotional, heart-wrenching movie.
The Many Benefits of this Hormone
As you can see, there are various ways that oxytocin benefits us. Here are just some of the benefits the cuddle hormone has to offer:
- Increase brain function: children and teenagers with autism have shown increased levels of brain function when given oxytocin.
- Anti-inflammatory: relieves cramping, headaches and migraines.
- Stress relief: This is where the hugging and cuddling comes in. The oxytocin that your brain releases during hugging a loved one or petting an animal has been shown to reduce stress.

When you are suffering from pain and discomfort, what pain killer do you turn to the most? If you said Vicodin, Norco, or Lorcet, then you may be in search of a replacement quickly. New federal restrictions have taken effect since Oct. 6, impacting hundreds of medications utilizing hydrocodone, the highly addictive painkiller in the United States. At our compounding pharmacy we carry some of the best painkiller treatments that are customized pain gels or fibromyalgia treatments without utilizing the addictive ingredients. We still believe that every patient should have as much information as possible about the new pain medication regulations, so allow us to break some of this down for you.
Prescription Painkiller Issues
Although by now it may be known by most, but prescription painkiller abuse is a problem experienced throughout the majority of the United States. U.S. health care providers wrote over 259 million prescriptions for opioid painkillers (such as Vicodin and Oxycontin) in 2012, enough to give a bottle of pills to every adult in the country. Using painkillers outside of its intended purpose of treatment is what makes painkiller abuse so intolerable these days.
Every 19 minutes, someone loses their life from a prescription drug overdose in the U.S. According to the American Academy of Pain Medicine, about 9 percent of Americans over the age of 12 have abused a painkiller drug. In addition a recent study reported that over 3,500 patients surveyed were admitted to addiction treatment facilities. The two main culprits for their addiction, hydrocodone and oxycodone, accounted for 75 percent of opiate addiction. Losing control of their body to constantly take the edge off is what drove the DEA to make these regulations a reality.
This decision by the DEA requires patients to go through a special prescription ordering process that may make it difficult for patients who thrive on them. In the past, patients were allowed to visit their doctor every six months and have a 6-month supply of Vicodin, but now the ruling requires patients to visit their physicians regularly, as early as every 3 months to evaluate their progress and need for hydrocodone painkillers.
As one DEA resident agent stated, Hydrocodone was not intended to be a long-term pain management prescription, and with increasing rates of abuse the need for control of these substances is required to avoid serious patient consequences.
