Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide is a topical agent used for the treatment of acne. It may be used as a standalone agent or in tandem with other acne treatments. Benzoyl peroxide helps to combat bacteria that can build up and then cause acne; it works as a drying agent that forces the skin to dry.

How to Use Benzoyl Peroxide

Benzoyl peroxide can be in delivered in many forms such as creams and lotions, gels, or daily cleansing bars. It is important to understand how your skin will react to benzoyl peroxide, so all users are advised to use it only once per day when beginning, as directed by your doctor. Always use the product as directed by your physician and follow directions carefully on product packaging.

Possible Side Effects

Some users have experienced redness, burning and/or stinging, as well as irritation which could possibly resolve after continuing treatment, but if side effects persist or get worse, contact your physician and compounding pharmacist for consultation.

Seek medical attention immediately if you experience any of the following severe allergic reactions to benzoyl peroxide:

  • Itching and/or Swelling (watch the face, throat and tongue especially)
  • Intense Dizziness
  • Rash
  • Difficulty Breathing

Contraindications

Consult with your doctor before using benzoyl peroxide. Benzoyl peroxide may be contraindicated for anyone with any of the following medical conditions:

  • Skin Irritation or Rash
  • Pregnancy
  • Peripheral Vascular Disease
  • Respiratory Disease

Anemia from Pyruvate Kinase and G6PD Deficiency Benzoyl peroxide may be contraindicated for anyone with allergies to any of the following:

  • Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS)
  • Benzoyl Peroxide
