Children and medications don’t seem to like one another. Children may resist taking a medication because they don’t like the taste. Sometimes swallowing pills is difficult for the child. Injections are frightening and painful. The compounding pharmacist solves these and similar problems by varying the delivery format of the medication in appropriate ways. The pharmaceutical industry has not invested sufficiently to develop new and / or more appropriate medication for children, perhaps because the pediatric market is perceived by the industry to be relatively limited. One result of this is that pediatric medications are neither suitably labeled nor produced in suitable dosage quantities for children. The compounding pharmacist can respond to problems of this nature. Many pediatric delivery formats are available for pediatric prescriptions including attractively flavored and colored lozenges, suspensions, “gummy bears”, lollipops (for longer periods of absorption) and ,the like. For special cases, too, transdermal preparations for application to particular areas can be provided by the compounding pharmacist on an individualized basis.
