Hormones only produced in the female body are estrogen, progesterone, and estrogen. There are three estrogens namely: Estrone which is the main estrogen that continues to be produced after female menopause; Estradiol which is excreted by the ovary and which is produced before menopause; and E3 which makes up the largest proportion of circulating estrogens. Progesterone is the female hormone associated with the operation of the estrus cycle and is prescribed to post menopausal women to balance E1 or Estrone. The androgens are produced by both males and females and include Testosterone and dehydroepiandrosterone or DHEA. These hormones are important for the maintenance of skin tone, hair, quality, and libido and also make up the inventory of substances that may be utilized in hormone replacement therapy for women in consultation with the client’s physician.
