Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy for Men and Women

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy, or BHRT, is the use of supplemental hormones derived from plant chemicals to treat conditions associated with hormone imbalances. Bioidentical hormones are an alternative to the synthetic hormones used in traditional hormone therapy. Bioidentical hormones have the same chemical makeup as those found in the human body. Based on your lab tests and your doctor’s recommendations, Fusion Rx compounding pharmacy creates a bioidentical hormone replacement treatment that is personalized for your unique needs. As a result, some people who have not had success with standard treatments may find relief with this customized therapy.

BHRT For Women

Hormone imbalance is most common in menopausal women, but it can affect women at any age. Decreased levels of estrogen, the female hormone, can result in osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, decreased memory function, dry skin and hair, and vaginal dryness. Lowered levels of progesterone may lead to fibrocystic breasts and endometriosis. Progesterone therapy can offer protection against cancer and relief from anxiety, depression and insomnia. Lastly, testosterone, which is present in the female body in small amounts, is important for sexual drive. Depending on your particular symptoms and lab results, your doctor will prescribe a combination of bioidentical hormones prepared by Fusion Rx compounding pharmacy to be used as a cream or suppository, taken orally, or injected.

BHRT for Men

Although it is less talked about, men also experience a decline in hormone levels that can have bothersome and even debilitating effects. Testosterone levels begin to decrease in men after age 30 at a rate of about 1 percent per year. Lowered testosterone levels result in decreased energy, loss of libido, loss of muscle strength and mass, weight gain, osteoporosis, emotional changes and sleep problems. Lack of testosterone also results in decreased red blood cell production and sperm count. Progesterone is also a vital hormone for men. Testosterone is made from progesterone, so decreased levels of progesterone could result in reduced testosterone production. Decreased levels of progesterone have also been associated with prostate cancer, largely because testosterone acts as an antagonist to estrogen, protecting against abnormally high levels of estrogen in the male body, which can cause prostate cells to become cancerous.

Estrogen imbalances may have other deleterious effects. A study in the Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that increased or decreased levels of estrogen are predictors of mortality in aging men. The study observed 501 men with chronic heart failure. Men with the lowest levels of estrogen were 317 percent more likely to die during the three years following the study, while men with the highest levels of estrogen were 133 percent more likely to die. Men who had balanced estrogen levels had the fewest deaths in the follow-up period. Testosterone is an antagonist to estrogen, helping to keep high estrogen levels in check.

Depending on your particular condition, Fusion Rx compounding pharmacy will formulate a dosage that addresses your bioidentical hormone replacement needs.

Over the past years, menopausal women in America have been prescribed either Premarin or Prempro hormone replacement therapy without much question. Both Premarin and Prempro are a mixture of estrogens derived from the urine of pregnant horses, Prempro contains synthetic progesterone or progestin.  Both Premarin and Prempro have served to replace the human sex hormones that naturally taper off in perimenopausal and menopausal women – primarily estrogen and progesterone.

For a long time it was thought that taking synthetic hormones did not only improve women’s menopausal symptoms, but also protected women against heart disease, osteoporosis, helped to maintain youthful skin
